What other urologic conditions can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is an effective and safe complementary therapy for a wide range of urinary conditions . It works by regulating the nervous system's relationship with the bladder and pelvic floor, reducing inflammation, and strengthening the immune response.
Some common conditions I treat include:
Urinary Incontinence: This includes both stress incontinence (leakage during physical activity) and urge incontinence. Acupuncture helps by strengthening pelvic floor muscles and improving bladder control through neuromodulation
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Acupuncture can reduce the frequency of infections by boosting immune function and helping the bladder empty more completely
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) / Bladder Pain Syndrome: For those with chronic bladder pain, acupuncture can help reduce inflammation and manage the sensory hypersensitivity associated with the condition
Urinary Retention: Studies indicate that acupuncture and specifically electroacupuncture or PTNS (percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation) can help patients who have difficulty fully emptying their bladder
Prostate-Related Issues (BPH): In men, acupuncture can help manage urinary flow problems and symptoms related to an enlarged prostate--BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia).
Nocturia: Acupuncture is a promising option for reducing the frequency of nighttime urination
Pain: This is a unique review we authored on pain management and urology
