How does acupuncture help female fertility?
Acupuncture supports female fertility through a combination of physical and neurological mechanisms that move the body toward a state more receptive to conception. In my over twenty years of practice, treatment does take time, and a treatment plan is usually several months.
Some of the ways acupuncture works for female fertility are by:
Hormone Regulation: Acupuncture stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, which controls the release of essential reproductive hormones like FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone), LH (Luteinizing Hormone), estrogen, and progesterone. Acupuncture can also help regulate the menstrual cycle and promotes consistent ovulation.
Enhanced Blood Flow: Acupuncture inhibits the sympathetic nervous system activity (fight or flight), and helps to dilate blood vessels, increasing blood and nutrient delivery to the ovaries and uterus. Scientific studies have shown that acupuncture might also help with improving egg quality and the uterine lining.
Stress Reduction: Acupuncture triggers the body to release endorphins and other neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which calm the nervous system and lower systemic stress. It helps to reduce high levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) which can disrupt the delicate hormonal balance needed for reproduction.
How does acupuncture help male fertility?
In men, acupuncture helps improve fertility by addressing the physical, hormonal, and cellular environments where sperm develop. Men produce new sperm continuously, so there is a unique 72-90 day window to influence the quality of the new sperm.
There are several new studies that show that nutrition, lifestyle, and stress impact sperm production in men so acupuncture, TCM, and integrative medicine are also useful in enhancing male fertility.
Some of the ways that acupuncture, nutrition, and lifestyle optimization can help men are by:
Improved Testicular Blood Flow: Acupuncture enhances circulation to the testes, ensuring an optimal supply of oxygen and nutrients. It also helps regulate scrotal health and the pelvic floor.
Hormonal Regulation: Acupuncture modulates the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis. This helps balance key hormones like testosterone, LH (Luteinizing Hormone), and FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) that drive sperm production in the testes.
Reducing Oxidative Stress: High levels of oxidative stress can damage sperm DNA and impair motility. Acupuncture, nutrition, and dietary supplements increase the body's natural antioxidant enzymes, helping to protect the structural integrity of the sperm.
Stress Management: Chronic stress triggers cortisol (the stress hormone), which can disrupt reproductive hormones and libido. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) which has many positive effects in the body.
