How do you treat prostatitis and male pelvic pain?
For men facing Chronic Prostatitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP/CPPS), an integrative approach combines conventional medical oversight with holistic therapies to address pain, urinary dysfunction, and quality of life.
How does acupuncture help with chronic prostatitis and pelvic pain?
Acupuncture helps alleviate symptoms by modulating pain pathways, reducing inflammation in the prostate, and enhancing pelvic circulation. It works by stimulating the nervous system to release natural pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. Acupuncture has been shown to be scientifically effective for the treatment of men with CP/CPPS and is part of the treatment recommendations by the American Urologic Association.
What is a common acupuncture treatment protocol like for this condition?
Acupuncture points are typically applied in the lumbosacral region, lower extremities, and abdomen, not in the penis or genital area. Some techniques involve electrical stimulation of points near the tibial and pudendal nerves to inhibit local sensory transmission and reduce pain.
What other integrative therapies might be recommended?
Beyond acupuncture, an integrative plan may include:
Supplements and Herbal Medicine: Supplements like saw palmetto, quercetin, pollen extract, or Chinese herbs (TCM)
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy (PFPT): Education and instruction about at home exercises, manual techniques like myofascial release to address muscle tension and trigger points, referral to a physical therapist who does internal pelvic floor work.
Lifestyle Changes: Dietary adjustments (reducing caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods), stress reduction techniques, and exercise moderation.
When you work with me, your care is rooted in decades of clinical research and practice. I pioneered some of the early clinical trials on acupuncture for pelvic pain and have spent years studying the efficacy of herbal medicines in both laboratory and clinical settings. This unique background allows me to offer you a treatment plan that is not only intuitive but grounded in scientific results.

How does acupuncture help with pelvic pain and prostatitis?
Think of acupuncture as a way to reboot the nerves in the pelvic floor. For men with chronic prostatitis (CP/CPPS), I use specific points to improve blood flow to the prostate, reduce local inflammation, and—most importantly—calm the overactive pain signals the nervous system is sending to the pelvic floor muscles.
I’ve tried many things. Why is your approach different?
In my twenty-plus years of practice, I’ve learned that needles alone are rarely enough for treating complex pelvic pain. I have also dedicated time and research on this condition, which is still sometimes poorly understood by many conventional urologists. With acupuncture, my approach is active and hands-on. I incorporate manual therapies like Tui Na (medical massage) or myofascial release, I look closely at your Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pattern, which is individual in every patient with CP/CPPS. I also look at the big picture and use research-backed nutrition and botanical medicine protocols to reduce systemic inflammation and identify lifestyle triggers that might be adversely affecting you
Does research support this for men’s health?
Yes. Large-scale clinical studies and organizations like the American Urological Association recognize acupuncture as a valid and effective option for reducing the pain and urinary symptoms associated with CP/CPPS. It can often more effective in combination with medication and other therapies because several pathways need to be addressed in CP/CPPS treatment.
How many acupuncture treatments will I need before I feel better?
While every case is unique, most men begin to see a nudge toward improvement within 3 to 6 sessions. A standard course for chronic conditions is often 10 to 12 treatments. During our first visit, I will provide you with a clear, estimated timeline based on your specific history.
Can changing my diet really help with chronic pelvic pain?
Absolutely. Systemic inflammation acts as fuel for pelvic pain. What you eat also directly impacts your body's chemistry. By choosing anti-inflammatory foods, and sometimes eating or avoiding foods directly related to your TCM pattern (many people must avoid iced coffee and alcohol), you can lower the sensitivity of your nervous system and reduce flares associated with prostatitis. I help my patients identify which specific foods are acting as triggers and which are acting as medicine.
Can I continue seeing my Urologist while doing this?
Absolutely and I might refer you to one of my trusted colleagues if you need their expertise. Integrative medicine is about collaboration and providing the best patient care
