How does acupuncture help sports injuries, pain, and musculoskeletal complaints?
Acupuncture is a precision tool for athletes, dancers, musicians, weekend warriors, and people with arthritis or other types of pain. Acupuncture doesn't just mask pain, but accelerates the body’s exemplary ability to repair itself. Whether you are dealing with an acute strain, a chronic overuse injury, muscle pain and tension, or arthritis, my hands-on approach focuses on three main goals:
Reducing inflammation and pain
Restoring range of motion
Rebooting the nervous system
Acupuncture helps sports injuries through several scientifically-backed mechanisms:
Trigger Point Release: Needles are stronger than manual therapy techniques at releasing knots or trigger points in muscle. Trigger point release immediately resets the muscle spindle, allowing a tight, guarded muscle to lengthen and relax.
Micro-Circulation: Inserting a needle creates a micro-trauma that signals the body to send fresh, oxygenated blood and growth factors to the site. This is essential for healing tissue like tendons and ligaments, which naturally have poor blood supply.
Pain Modulation: Acupuncture stimulates the release of neurotransmitters like enkephalins and endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers. It also reduces pain signals traveling to the brain, providing relief without side effects of some oral medications
Reducing Systemic Inflammation: By balancing the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), acupuncture lowers cortisol (stress hormone) and C-reactive protein (inflammatory marker) levels, helping your whole body recover faster from training.
My hands-on treatment style is great for patients with injury and musculoskeletal pain. Besides acupuncture I will likely perform:
Tui Na (massage) & Myofascial Release: To break up adhesions and scar tissue
Cupping Therapy: To decompress the fascia and draw stagnant blood out of deep muscle tissue
Infrared heat and moxibustion: heat therapy that improves circulation and speeds up healing time
Electrostimulation of if needed
Ultrasound or laser acupuncture if needed
I am privileged to serve each year as a medical staff acupuncturist for the US Open Tennis Tournament in Flushing, Queens. As part of the Mount Sinai Medical Services Team, I work directly with the male players through both the qualifying rounds and the main draw, providing high-performance recovery and injury management at one of the world's most demanding athletic events.
