How is acupuncture used in prostate cancer?
Acupuncture is an effective, non-pharmacological way to manage many side effects and symptoms that patients might experience while going through prostate cancer treatment. Some of these include:
Digestive Health: Nausea, diarrhea, and constipation
Energy & Mood: Fatigue, anxiety, and mood changes
Insomnia: Difficulty sleeping
Pain Management: Joint, muscle, and bone pain
Urinary Health: Urinary urgency, leakage, and nocturia
Sexual Health: Libido, erectile function
Vasomotor Symptoms: Hot flashes and heart palpitations
With a career-long focus on prostate cancer care, I blend clinical research with the intuitive art of TCM. I conducted some of the first clinical trials on acupuncture for hot flashes in men and continue to research how integrative therapies improve quality of life. By framing your symptoms through the lens of TCM patterns, we can create a personalized strategy that supports your body’s resilience and helps you manage the side effects of treatment.
What nutrition & integrative therapies do you offer for prostate cancer patients?
Dietary Supplement and Herbal Medicine Protocols: We will discuss important supplements to take and some you might want to avoid
Exercise & Physical Activity Consultation: We will assess your current activity level as vigorous aerobic exercise and resistance training are essential for maintaining bone and muscle strength and modulating your immune system
Mind-Body Practices: Meditation can reduce fatigue, improve pelvic floor strength and manage some of the stress and anxiety associated with a cancer diagnosis
Nutrition & Diet: Nutrition consultation is an in-depth discussion about your current diet and goals. Specific recommendations are tailored depending on your stage of treatment (e.g.: preparing for surgery, active surveillance, biochemical recurrence)
With a career-long focus on prostate cancer research, I specialize in the clinical application of nutrition and botanical medicine in men with prostate cancer. I currently serve in a multidisciplinary clinic alongside medical and radiation oncologists and urologists, providing a truly integrated, team-based approach to patient care. Our team remains at the forefront of the field, recently publishing a comprehensive review on the biological mechanisms linking obesity to prostate cancer development and outcomes and have recently been an invited contributor on a chapter on nutrition and prostate cancer for an upcoming textbook.
