How do you work with patients with breast cancer?
Acupuncture is widely recognized as a supportive therapy for managing the physical and emotional side effects of breast cancer and its treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone therapy (aromatase inhibitors or tamoxifen). Some of the common symptoms I treat include:
Nausea and Vomiting: Frequently used to manage side effects of chemotherapy or post-surgery recovery. Acupuncture can be as effective as standard anti-nausea medications.
Joint and Muscle Pain: Specifically effective for arthralgia (joint stiffness and pain) caused by aromatase inhibitors or tamoxifen used as hormone therapy.
Post-Surgical Pain: Helps reduce the need for high doses of narcotic pain relievers following breast surgery. Works great in concert with physical therapy (PT)
Hot Flashes: Clinical trials have shown significant reductions in the severity and frequency of hot flashes associated with breast cancer treatments and/or stopping hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Cancer-Related Fatigue: Many women report feeling more energized and a significant reduction in persistent fatigue often caused by radiation and surgery
Peripheral Neuropathy (PN): Acupuncture may help alleviate the numbness, tingling, or pins and needles sensations in the hands and feet caused by certain chemotherapy drugs. I use acupuncture, manual therapy, ultrasound, and sometimes laser acupuncture to treat PN
Lymphedema: Emerging evidence suggests it can help reduce arm swelling and improve the range of motion in the affected limb and also works great with PT. I also perform manual therapy and localized lymphatic massage
Anxiety and Depression: Acupuncture can helps stabilize mood and promotes relaxation during the high-stress periods of diagnosis and treatment.
Sleep Disturbances: It can help improves overall sleep quality and help patients fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
Cognitive Function or Brain Fog: Recent research indicates it may help with chemobrain or brain fog helping to improving mental clarity
Throughout my career, I have served as an investigator on numerous clinical trials focused on breast cancer symptom management. My research specifically addresses the most challenging side effects of treatment, including chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, aromatase inhibitor-induced joint pain, and hot flashes. This deep clinical foundation allows me to offer my patients evidence-based acupuncture and integrative protocols that are proven to improve quality of life during treatment and after recovery.
